PostSubject: Dartboard vibration annoying neighbours.   Fri Jan 28, 2011 9:25 pm

Hi all, new to the forum but not to the game.

I recently fitted a dartboard for my mate who's just moved into his new house. I've put up several boards in the past at my house, parents and in work but unfortunately this one hasn't gone so well. We put it up last Saturday afternoon and hand a couple hours practice. I went over last night and an hour in the neighbour come over asking if we were doing any construction work as she could hear a great deal of banging, I innocently said no but then she said "it sounds like 3 repetitive hits with a hammer" then it occured to us what she could here, what a gutser! So now we are looking at a new position for the Blade 4 but nowhere else is obvious due to it being a 1 bedroom middle terrace with little outside wall space to mount it to. Is there anything I can do to sounddeaden or reduce the noise for the neighbour? Personally I can see how it can be that loud but apparently it makes the shelves rattle :/

Cheers for any advice.
Steve

Hi steve welcome, tricky one this, try sticking some pinboard or cork tiles on the wall then fit the dartboard.
Something soft will help to deaden the sound, a foam dartboard surround also helps quieten things.

Took me ages to find a spot in my house to, the problem is the space too. I eventually, after reorganising, stuck it in our bedroom, on a wall that isn't the same wall as either neighbours, just don't play to late. The noise seems to travel upwards so as people spend most their time downstairs seems to help. I also have changed from having the dartboard and surround on the wall to a solid wooden cabinet and cut a piece of laminate flooring underlay to size to fit behind it. Laminate flooring undelay is designed to reduce noise when you are walking on the wood, you can usually buy it in sheets.

Thanks for replies guys, liking the sound of the cork matting.... brings me back to my childhood days where I had a Hornby trainset on a 8x4 sheet of a wood, used to vibrate like crazy before we mounted the track on cork tiles. Will give it a whirl Smile

My dear dart friends,

Please find my construction for perfect noise damping. I used a pretty thick but cheap carpet that was left over from carpeting. It is fixed with two sided tape at the frontof the mdf fixing board, at the back, in the top bracket, at the bottom distance bracket and between the dartboard and the front.

First I created the top bracket, in the form of a gutter with carpet in it. Next a similar construction was fixed to the board upside, so that I could hang it in the middle of the gutter. Take care that no wooden parts are touching each other. To prevent that I fixed carpet to the back of the fixing board as well.

The distance bracket was created at the bottom, with carpet fixed on top. As you can see from the sideview the construction is hanging loose in the gutter but there is no physical contact with the fixing board and the wall other then via very thick carpet.

Finally carpet was fixed to the front, the dartboard bracket was fixed to the front, and a pretty long screw was fixed at the center back side to allow even more carpet between the front and teh dartboard. Use enough to keep the board stable.

The result is a very dry dartboard sound without transferring the noise trough the wall.

Have fun and good darts!

Looks good if you have a big enough area to throw in.. does it weigh down on the wall?

Yes it does. The top gutter is fixed to the wall with 5 screws. The bottom is not fixed. Due to the weight of the fixingboard and the carpets (without the bottom bracket) it already tends to lean forward. Then adding the heavy weight of the dartboard it leans even more. So with the bottom bracket + carpet you bring the board back vertical, and all available weight will push that to the wall.

The dartboard is also 2 cm from the fixing board with a long screw, so I've created a lot of leaning weigth keeping the construction stable. When the fixing board tends to lower a little because the carpet in the gutter becomes thinner under weigth, just lift it of and lay an extra piece of carpet in it.

You will love the "thud" sounds of the darts without noise from the wall.

Hi, many years ago when I used to live in a similar situation as described, I placed two screws either side at the top of a doorframe, purchases some hardboard and cut it the same width as the doorframe and similar length. I then drilled 2 holes either side of the hardboard with 2 different sized drill bits but so the holes were connected, the larger hole immediately below the smaller hole, so that a screw head can pass through the bottom larger hole then just let gravity do its job the hardboard will hang so that the screw heads cannot pass through the smaller connecting drill hole above.

Measure and fix the dartboard to the hardboard and you can now set up and remove the board with ease and at will, you can even place screws in more than one doorframe if necessary, so that the board can be moved. I painted the screws white to blend in with the door frames and they were barely noticeable.

Still not an ideal situation admittedly, but it worked for me.
